The conventional cam and peg steering gear was also borrowed from the existing Austin A70/A90 models. Originally, the steering gear was made by Burman, but from chassis number 230978 (RHD) and 231109 (LHD) a new type of steering gear box made by Cam Gears was introduced. On this type of steering box the diameter of the rocker shaft was increased. As the 100 was conceived with the American market in  mind from the start, left-hand drive cars dominated in production; Estimate fewer than 10 per cent of the cars had right-hand drive.

The steering box was mounted in front of the radiator, with an immensely long steering column. On the early cars the column was adjustable, but from chassis 149930 a fixed steering column was introduced (corresponding body number was 1001 and an adjustable driver's seat was introduced at the same time). The Bluemels steering wheel was 161/2in in diameter, with three equally-spaced wire spokes, with two pairs of wires each. The rim and hub were black. The hub carried a plain horn push in a chrome ring, and a self-cancelling trafficator (flasher) switch. The rim had finger grips on the reverse. When in the straight-ahead position, the top spoke should be vertical (like a Mercedes-Benz star!).

The steering gear ratio was always 12.6 to 1, with about 21/2 turns lock to lock. The turning circle was 35ft; track toe-in was 1/16in to 1/8in. From chassis 157624, the adjustable ball pins on the steering links were replaced by non-adjustable ones. Shim adjustment to the steering gear was replaced by screw-type rocker shaft adjustment from chassis 219137 (RHD) and 219258 (LHD). There were minor changes to the steering gear on the BN2 model, and an alternative design of steering tubes and levers came in with chassis 228932. The steering column, box and links were all painted black.
