Although there were always six exhaust ports, the two centre pairs of exhaust ports were virtually siamesed. The front three and rear three cylinders each had their own exhaust manifold, leading to two downpipes with flexible sections. There was a single Burgess silencer mounted under the floor on the left-hand side, with dual intakes and outlets, and dual tailpipes running back below the rear axle on the left-hand side. However, it is thought that some early BN4 cars had only a single tailpipe. The exhaust system was flexibly mounted in three places - at the front of the silencer, at the rear of the silencer, and behind the rear axle. The manifolds were not painted and the exhaust system itself was black.

Im January 1961, from chassis number 13601 (late 3000 Mark I), cars for export to Europe became available with the 'Continental' exhaust system. This had a main silencer of a slightly different pattern, and the tailpipe was split in two sections behind the rear axle. The second section of the tailpipe bent through 90° to a secondary silencer mounted transversely across the tail of the car, with a dual flexible mount on the right-hand side. Ath the end of the secondary silencer the tailpipes bent through a right angle again, to emerge on the right.

Evidently this was the exhaust system which served as the model for that on the 3000 Mark III model from chassis number H-BJ8/25315 onwards. These cars also had a transverse secondary silencer at the back, with the tailpipe emerging on the right-hand side, but the Mark III exhaust system was completely dualised, with twinned main and secondary silencers. Despite the revised rear suspension package permitting additional axle movement found on Phase II cars from chassis 26705 onwards, no further change to the exhaust system was found necessary. ON the BJ8 models, the same exhaust system was found on cars for all markets.
